July Meetup 2016

hosted by Tobias Pfeiffer by Movinga (www.movinga.de), 07.07.2016 at 19:00

Attention! Preponed to 19:00 due to the semi-finals

We will start early and cut the lightning talks (small announcements may happen). There will be food, Pizza, (vegetarian and vegan options included) so you don't have to worry about getting food before the event starts. Food starts being served before the meetup at around 18:30 and is first come first served, as usual. The semi-final only starts at 21:00 and there are plenty of places to watch it nearby.

Also note that this address is correct and conflicts with the address on their website as this is the tech office :)

Join us in our monthly pursuit of fun and knowledge!

Modern frontends without Javascript

In this talk I want to explore how server-side Ruby apps can achieve most of the speed and flexibility of client-side Javascript frameworks, while massively reducing complexity.

Over a span of three years our team has gone from server-rendered Rails apps to client-side single page applications (SPAs). Overwhelmed by the complexity of modern Javascript development stacks, we're now moving frontends back to the server, using modern browser capabilities for a fresh take on progressive enhancement techniques.

Speaker: Henning Koch is CEO at makandra, a Ruby on Rails consultancy in Augsburg (Rails LTS, makandra cards). He's the author of Growing Rails Applications in Practice.

Living with Tricky Bugs

Some bugs are easy, and they're great. Some bugs are critical, and they get solved no matter how hard they are. Other bugs seem perfectly evolved to survive in your application: too complicated to solve quickly, too minor to merit extensive work, too uncertain to ignore completely.

Maybe you've dealt with those occasional database or network errors in your background workers, or that weird UI bug you can detect but not reproduce. The occasional connected sensor that's misconfigured and rejects all your commands. Left untended, these kinds of tricky bugs stick around, breeding in your error reporting and masking the signal from more critical issues.

In this talk, you'll learn how categorizing complicated, lingering problems is one of the key steps to dealing with them. The very act of classifying the bugs in our apps often points the way to new, effective solutions to problems that defy easy code fixes.

The Neo4j.rb Project

I am one of the maintainers of the Neo4j.rb project. I would like to offer a presentation about Neo4j and how ActiveNode and ActiveRel can provide an experience similar to ActiveRecord or Mongoid but with the ability to easily and quickly traverse relationships in your model. I can also present a demo of the Neo4j web console via some example demo datasets which I have available.

I will be in Berlin from 07.07 through 04.08. Happy to answer other questions!
